category: uncategorized | leave a comment ignoring the obvious by dad when concealing a geocache back in its hiding place this afternoon, matthew noticed that although you couldn’t see it from the above, you could still see if from the side. more sticks and leaves were sought to cover the thing completely. however, i feel this may have been excessive, given that people will quite happily ignore the obvious. i remember seeing an example of this in action when televisual mind-trickster derren brown left an open wallet containing cash on the pavement in oxford circus. it was left alone by the many hundreds of people who carefully skirted it, largely due to the fact that it was enclosed in a bright yellow circle painted on the pavement. the fact that it was so obvious inferred that it was meant to be there and meant, therefore, to be left alone. of course, this is all an excuse to post this google streetview image of earl’s court underground station. view larger map look closely and you’ll notice that not one single person is standing next to the large blue box, trying to open it, take photos of it or just wonder at its amazement, much like matthew would do if here were there. yep, sometimes people will ignore the most amazing things. monday, july 26th, 2010 | category: uncategorized | leave a comment can you get curly-haired cats? by dad not sure what prompted this question from alice, but it sounds interesting. lynne, a friend of mine from university and cat expert, reliably informed me: please tell alice yes there are curly-haired cats – like the cornish rex (wavy rather than curly) and i have come across a bizarre breed called la perm (seriously). wednesday, february 24th, 2010 | category: unanswered questions | leave a comment is infinity a number? by dad an argument in the back of the car on the way home from school erupted one day. is infinity a number? alice argued it wasn’t. matthew argued it was (though i suspect this was purely just to take the opposite stance as his sister). real, live, proper mathematicians were contacted to clear this up. mark, a friend of mine from university who did mathematics, offered this explanation: “infinity isn’t a number. it is often used in the same way as one, though. there is also more than one type of infinity, some infinities are ‘bigger’ than others… the simple way to think about it is the horizon. if you stand on level, open ground and look all around you, everything you see is real (or should be) and you can touch it as well. but way in the distance is the horizon – it’s real, it exists, but you can never touch it as if you try to move towards it, it will always keep moving further away. for more mind bending thoughts on infinity, look up hilbert’s paradox of the grand hotel , and find out why many philosophers have tried to use discussions on infinity to prove the existence of god.” wednesday, february 24th, 2010 | category: unanswered questions | leave a comment unanswered questions by dad the world is a mysterious place alright. and only children fully appreciate its wonder and weirdness. all parents know of the questions children can pose at any time of the day or night, usually apropos of nothing at all. very occasionally, our children have asked things that we simply have no idea about. rather than shake their faith in their parents’ omniscience, the internet has sprung to our aid. through the wonders of facebook, etc, numerous friends have volunteered their knowledge to build this encyclopaedia of stuff . if you can add to any of the answers, please do. wednesday, february 24th, 2010 | category: unanswered questions | comments are closed potato animals and mrs grimstone by dad whilst foraging through my parents’ mammoth book collection a little while ago, i came across some gems from my childhood that i absolutely loved – “lester and the unusual pet” and “the adventures of lester”, written and illustrated by quentin blake. i vaguely remember quentin blake telling these stories as part of the bbc’s “jackanory” series in the 1970s. usually, i recalled these programs were fronted by some old bloke in a woolly cardigan, reading some dreary story from an autocue. however, quentin blake, when telling his stories, would stand at an enormous, blank wall and draw the pictures of lester and his friends, otto and flap-eared lorna with a fat marker pen as he told the story, moving along the wall as the story progressed. it was absolute magic – in just a few simple gestures with his pen, the stories would come alive in seconds before your eyes. and, being quentin blake, the stories were sufficiently mad-cap to engage children and adults alike. the books were borrowed from my parents’ library and are now well-loved reading material in our house. we all find ourselves giggling uncontrollably at the tired snake in the birdcage, mrs grimstone, the champion knitter, nose and the potato animals. the books, sadly, have been out of print for many years and searches of bookfinder.com reveal that dog-eared copies are changing hands for over £100. if you come across them in charity shops or second-hand bookshops, do snap them up. and listen carefully to the potato animals… sunday, december 20th, 2009 | tags: quentin blake | category: children's books | leave a comment stuff for dads by dad it’s my birthday – yay! when asked what matthew wanted to buy me for my birthday, he said “a book for dads”. and who’d that thought that amazon would oblige with a book entitled “ dad stuff ” – ideas for entertaining your children from babies up to grumpy old teenagers. as if your children needed convincing of your encyclopaedic knowledge of everything in the universe and ability to conjour up entertainment from thin air, this book gives you ideas for reinforcing what your children secretly already know but won’t admit. at least not to your face. i was a little wary at first, thinking that perhaps all the dad stuff i’ve been doing all these years was lacking in some respect. however, i was quickly reassured that not only did it include stuff that my friends and i used to do at school when i was a lad, but also lots of it i’d already been doing for the past 9 years. driving diggers, singing “this is the way the ladies ride”, the mysterious shrinking arm trick, 20 questions on long car journeys and the art of making up “knock knock” jokes. not that it does’t contain hundreds of other ideas that i can’t wait to try out, with matthew and alice, of course, such as stop-frame animation of lego magically building itself and creating real 3d photos with a digital camera and computer without the need for 3d glasses and buying a kubb set . i did, however, find it lacked 2 things that i would have found handy quite recently. building the definitive paper aeroplane from a single sheet of a4 and how to moonwalk. perhaps these are in volume 2 . in the meantime, i’ll just have to carry on being the utterly fantastic dad i already am. sunday, november 22nd, 2009 | category: uncategorized | leave a comment not at school by matthew i didn’t go to school yesterday because i was sick in the night. i’m feeling a bit better today. i’m going to eat my rice cracker. friday, november 20th, 2009 | category: uncategorized | leave a comment school dinners and food allergies by dad alice kicked off the posts to this blog with the most exciting thing she’d done that day – had school dinners for the first time. not something that most people would consider to be monumentous, but was something of a milestone for alice and us. this is something that we’d not envisaged would happ
